Sustainability
The Misbourne has prioritised sustainability as one of the core objectives in our School Improvement Plan (SIP) and we are committed to working toward embedding sustainability into all our future thinking, decisions and direction.
At the heart of our community of students, staff and stakeholders, The Misbourne has a central role to play in educating its community about the importance of sustainability. To achieve this, we must first practice what we preach. To this end, we have signed up to the Let's Go Zero campaign, declaring our aim to work towards becoming carbon zero by 2030. In doing so, we're joining schools across the UK in this national campaign to show the overwhelming support for zero carbon schools and inviting government and local councils to work with us to reach this goal.
Our sustainability actions to date:
- We have worked with a Let's Go Zero Climate Action Advisor to develop a Climate Action Plan for 2025-2026, highlighting our priorities for the coming year.
- We have calculated our carbon footprint using the Count Your Carbon tool. This will enable us to benchmark our carbon output year on year.
- Converted the majority of our interior lighting to LED to cut our electricity usage.
- Our lights use PIRs to automatically turn themselves off.
- Signed up to Energy Sparks to monitor and reduce our energy consumption.
- Installed a solar array on the Sports Centre roof to power our sports hall via solar power.
- Undertaken significant heating improvement works to upgrade our boilers and improve the efficiency of our heating system.
- Appointed two eco champions within our Senior Student Leadership team to spearhead sustainability amongst the student body.
- Planted a vegetable garden to educate students about sustainable food sources.
- We have introduced food recycling in our cafe.
- We have teamed up with a sustainable uniform supplier, Earth Uniform.
- Achieved the Modeshift STARS Bronze travel award to encourage sustainable travel.
- Our fabulous Friends of The Misbourne run a second-hand uniform shop to sell good-quality second-hand uniform.
Our future sustainability plans:
- To install a solar canopy and EV charging points in the Sports Centre car park.
- To increase the number of rooftop solar arrays across our site.
- To install a BMS to manage our heating across the site from a central point.
- To work towards the Modeshift STARS Silver award to promote sustainable travel.
- To further develop our preferred supplier list to procure items from local suppliers wherever possible.
- To work with our catering partners, Accent Catering, to source local ingredients for our cafe.
